Civics Education through Comics and Workshops

The Applied Cartooning Lab is committed to helping students envision and build a stronger and more inclusive democracy.

In our home state of Vermont, The Applied Cartooning Lab worked with the Secretary of State’s office and Vermont Humanities to produced Freedom and Unity, A Graphic Guide To Civics and Democracy in Vermont. This comic book was distributed throughout the state at local libraries, classrooms, at the State House and on Town Meeting Day.

Nationally, a partnership with Chicago’s Mikva Challenge sent cartoonists to middle and high school classrooms on a five-state midwest tour. students gained a deeper understanding for how their government was designed to work, and how they could get more meaningfully involved in their government and communities..

We also worked with educators to create a lesson plan to supplement This Is What Democracy Looks Like that includes a week’s worth of activities and discussion questions that aligns with a C3 framework.
