Lab Partner: The Dartmouth and Slavery Project

The Applied Cartooning Lab is proud to be collaborating with the Dartmouth and Slavery Project, an initiative of Dartmouth College that investigates the institution’s historical ties to slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

In partnership with writer Hazel-Dawn Dumpert, archivist Peter Carini, and scholar Deborah King, the Lab is developing a comic book that centers on the lives of individuals enslaved by Dartmouth founder Eleazar Wheelock.

Historically rigorous and visually engaging, the publication is being designed with both educators and students in mind. This project reflects the Lab’s core belief that comics are a powerful tool for public history—inviting reflection, fostering dialogue, and helping communities confront difficult truths.

Stay tuned for updates as we share artwork-in-progress, insights from our research, and stories from the process of translating this complex history into comics form.
