Two Non-fiction Cartoonists Come to Campus
Cartoonists Scott McCloud and Eddie Ahn both visited CCS last week, bringing distinct insights on non-fiction comic making. McCloud, well-known for his seminal Understanding Comics, is a touchstone for the Applied Cartooning Lab. He met with CCS’s freshman class, discussing his work-in-progress book on visual communication, his preference for the term “explainer comics,” his collaboration with Raina Telgemeier, the four comic tribes, and more. His visits to White River Junction are always treasured.
This was Eddie Ahn’s first visit. As a cartoonist and environmental justice lawyer, Ahn serves as executive director of Brightline Defense. He presented on his newly released Advocate: A Graphic Memoir of Family, Community, and the Fight for Environmental Justice, reflecting on reconciling his definition of success with that of his immigrant parents. Like McCloud, Ahn carefully considers the formal aspects of his comics to maximize impact across both print and digital platforms.
