The Center for Cartoon Studies was challenged by Vermont’s Secretary of State office and Vermont Humanities to create a graphic guide about the past, promises, and challenges of democracy and civics in our brave little state. Freedom and Unity is the answer to that challenge.
Conversations with various stakeholders including town moderators, government officials, tribal representatives, journalists, and historians shaped the comic, and twenty thousand copies and counting have been distributed to libraries and classrooms throughout the state.
“As we approach election day, the state of our civil discourse is in disrepair, and trust in our democratic institutions is at an all-time low” said Jim Condos, Vermonts former Secretary of State. “I believe that the antidote to these divisive times is civics education, inspiring the next generation of leaders to be invested and engaged in our democratic and civic processes.”
