On June 2–3, 2026, faculty, graduate students, and cartoonists will gather to explore the power and potential of Comics-Based Research. CBR is a field of practice that applies systematic arts-making, data visualization, and sequential narrative to research across disciplines and forms of scholarship.
This symposium highlights work that uses comics to make research more accessible, interdisciplinary, and engaged with broader audiences. Through presentations, workshops, and conversations, participants will share projects and methods that challenge traditional academic formats and expand what counts as research. Hosted at UVM by the Comics-Based Research Lab, Humanities Center, and the Jack and Shirley Silver Special Collections Library, the gathering also reflects a growing network of collaborators.
As organizer Luis Vivanco notes, those working in comics-based research “find a lot of inspiration and models” in the work of the Applied Cartooning Lab, and the team is excited to partner with the Lab and CCS in organizing the event. The Applied Cartooning Lab at the Center for Cartoon Studies is proud to be a community partner. Here’s to mutual enrichment!
