Visiting Artist Caroline Hu

Last week, biologist, educator, and cartoonist Caroline Hu braved a snow storm to visit the Center for Cartoon Studies and gave an inspiring talk on teaching and learning science through comics.

In both her own practice and her work with students, she facilitates direct collaborations with scientists who want to visually communicate their observations to a wider audience but often lack the necessary skills. Caroline teaches at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, one of only two U.S. art schools with a science department.

When Caroline posted an open call for collaborators for her class, 1,461 scientists applied. Her students developed creative ways to visualize scientific concepts, and several of these comics have already been shared publicly at conferences and conventions.

Caroline Hu is currently working on a graphic novel about Jacques Cousteau, set in the Mediterranean Sea.
