The Applied Cartooning Lab is housed within the larger academic program of the Center for Cartoon Studies, where MFA, certificate, and workshop students develop storytelling and visual communication skills across a range of classes. Within the current MFA/Certificate program, students have many opportunities to build applied cartooning skills. First year students are given an in-depth nonfiction comics assignment as well as graphic note taking exercises. CCS also facilitates internship and externships for second-year students looking to explore collaborative work with non-profit organizations in the community.
The Applied Cartooning Lab also offers a hub and community space for students and faculty to meet and work on applied cartooning projects. CCS faculty, staff, and fellows who are involved in the Lab are also available to work with students directly on nonfiction projects as advisors in the second year of the MFA/Certificate program. Students at CCS have broad leeway to pursue their own approach to comics-making, and these are just a few of the many opportunities for CCS students interested in developing the collaborative and communicative skills associated with applied cartooning.
